Annual Seeding of the clam beds for the Town of Smithtown

October 28, 2023

This fall, as we do every fall, Smithtown Harbormasters assisted the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways (DEW) in the seeding of the clam beds. The DEW grows the clams in a series of racks and upwells throughout the summer. The DEW cleans and maintains the racks throughout the summer until the clams reach a sufficient size. The mature clams are then safely spread throughout the harbor. The beds grow and help keep our waterways clean, promote healthy ecology, and help support the local economy.
